New Group Empowers the Women of KGa
KGa WIC Has Inaugural Meeting
Inspired by groups like the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and ABC’s Women Build Washington, KGa’s Chief of Staff, Julie Whitehair has founded a Women’s Leadership Group at KGa. A 16-year veteran as a woman in construction, Julie’s experiences and knowledge will prove to be invaluable to the women of the newly formed group. She shares, “this group is intended to be a support network and mentorship program” for the women of the company.
Dubbed WIC (Women in Construction) KGa, the group was formed to provide tools and resources for women to support one another in leadership growth within our company. The mission of the group is to support the advancement of future women leaders, explore solutions to unique challenges encountered by women in the workplace, and lastly, to promote hard work, commitment, and integrity.
Women only account for about 16% of the workforce at KGa. And, while this is higher than the national average of women in construction (9.1%) only 4.1% of those women hold leadership positions. So, it was only appropriate that the topic of the first WIC KGa meeting was Women in Leadership. The meeting consisted of viewing the TED Talk: Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders followed by an open dialogue and concluded with group members sharing what their expectations and goals are for participating in WIC KGa.
The members of the group expressed a desire to utilize the group for networking, personal growth, professional development, and an overall desire to learn from other’s experiences in the construction industry. The group will meet monthly and each meeting will consist of a new topic. KGa is very excited about this new endeavor and hopes to see the group continue to grow and flourish.
